Alex, The author is Julian Stockwin. His credentials list entry into the British navy at age 15, transfer to the Australian navy and service in Vietnam, after commissioned into the royal navy reserve and awarded the MBE (whatever that is). I cannot attest to his credentials as a navigator but he sure as hell writes a good naval story, better than C.S.
