The height of the string above the surface of the earth is 413.32"
The string leaves the earth at 0.103957188 degrees from the "pull point"
The length of string not touching the earth is 911201.55"
The length of string touching the earth is 1576816159"
The total length of string is 1577727361"
Solved by construction in Excel and iterative goal seek.
> Wrap a string around the Earth, and pull it snug. Now, add an inch to the length of the string. How far off the surface will it stand?(assume it's symmetric)
More intersting question, what if it not symmetric? That is, after adding 1" you pinch a string at a point and pull it out until the rest of string snugs the earth tight. How much of a gap will it be? Will the cat get under it? Human? Elephant? Empire State building?
