    I'm not really trying to buy my own buoy, I was just using that as an
    example of "what do you call it?"  I saw the SailNet article you
    reference.  I find it fascinating because they note that these beasties
    come in various sizes (eg, 7x17) but the article nowhere gives a name for them.
    
    Since I made my post I've gotten an email from a Coast Guardsman who has
    served on a buoy tender and claims there is no name for them!  If they have
    lights or sound-producing devices, then they can be called that way (eg, a
    lighted buoy or a bell buoy), but if I have a plain-vanilla buoy of the
    with the truss-like upper works, there isn't a name for it!!
    
    Guess I'll have to add this buoy to my list of "things that we all see but
    don't have a name," like the groove that runs from your nose to your upper
    lip...
    
    Oh well, back to Lunar Distances... at least we have a name for them :-)
