    I love it!  On my ship it is a bit different.  The old man knows but would have to think long and hard to remember and his sextant is part of his home decor.  The Chief Mate (me) is the ship's expert and only one who actually uses either sextant, the 2nd and 3rd mates barely remember anything past shooting an azimuth.  We don't have any deck cadets to ask questions.,

    I've neither seen nor heard of any merchant ship having inertial navigation.  I would think it would be too difficult and/or expensive to maintain.  In fact, i've only read about it in a few reference texts and those were not the usual ones found on merchant ships.  They never mentioned them in school either.
