"Did inertial navigation ever make it to the Merchant Navy bridge or is
it still military only?"
I've neither seen nor heard of any merchant ship having inertial navigation. I would think it would be too difficult and/or expensive to maintain. In fact, i've only read about it in a few reference texts and those were not the usual ones found on merchant ships. They never mentioned them in school either.

I love it! On my ship it is a bit different. The old man
knows but would have to think long and hard to remember and his sextant is part
of his home decor. The Chief Mate (me) is the ship's expert and only one
who actually uses either sextant, the 2nd and 3rd mates barely remember anything
past shooting an azimuth. We don't have any deck cadets to ask questions.,
