This is somewhat tangential, but I found an interesting article from 1793 in London. It was advice to the users of pocket watches on setting their watches by a sundial. As I recall, it emphasized the importance of correcting for the equation of time.
I suppose in that era punctuality began to become an important issue as horology improved.
