Douglas If you are sure that the index prism shaft anti-backlash spring is now working and that you have removed all end float from that shaft, I agree the source of your problem probably lies with the worm shaft assembly. The helical antibacklash spring for the worm shaft is relatively weak, so if the lubrication is no longer good, it may not be working. The assembly was never meant to to be taken apart and, indeed, attempts to do so are likely to bend something important. If it rotates freely and any end float upwards is smartly returned downwards by the spring, all is well (some units were fitted so well that no end float is detectable). If not, I suggest a little clock oil on the bearings, encouraged by gentle warmth, until the shaft rotates and slides freely. The assembly is dowelled to the frame, but it is just possible that a previous explorer has damaged the dowel holes and some movement of the whole assembly occurs, so check the three attaching screws are tight. You are by now no doubt very familiar with the anatomy, but I am attaching a picture for those who are not.
