Byron: Yes you are correct but making decisions on the bridge for navigation .One to 60 is quick and considered accurate enough. Think about mentally dividing a distance by a true radiant with decimals into distance while underway. My "Franklin Piloting Technique uses the distance of an angle, to spread out to include the ship observer fix on a chart that may be not a perfect fix because of compass error. A bearing from the fix to the far NAVAID give a compass correction. The Navy and other text always uses the 1/60 rule.
