I want to share some of my early experience, mostly with the Davis art horizon. By far the most important source of errors were blunders of all kinds. It is still the most frequent source of errors. Like misreading the numbers from the tables, or misreading the time on my watch, etc. But one case with art horizon last fall was especially funny: I took a long series of Sun altitudes which looked very good (the scattering on the plot was small) but there was a systematic error of almost 1/2 of a degree. It took me almost a whole day of thinking before I understood what was going on: I confused the Sun reflection in my art horizon with the Sun reflection in the surface of the glass table on which this art horizon was placed:-) A.
