There seems to have been no substantial damage in Mystic Seaport. See here:

So the question remains: why didn't he run into one of the more sheltered harbours? Obviously he misjudged the seaworthiness of his vessel and his crew. It reminds me of something we experience in Germany every spring: there are lots of small airplane crashes and they are almost all by experienced pilots that misjudge things after 5 - 6 months without practice.
