    I notice that the gap is greatest on the innermost tube, and that there  
    seems to be a blotchy appearance to the aluminum.  I wonder if corrosion  
    had caused the diameter to "grow" and the paper to slip at the  
    pre-weakened butt joint?  An argument (perhaps) for the micarta like paper  
    (or cloth) and resin tubes.

    Mine goes from slightly less than 1 degree (perhaps 2 minutes less) at the  
    bottom, and not quite 89d 2 minutes at the top.  Really wasted space, I
