The DDay story reminds me of a similar local happening. During the Civil War, the US Coast Survey under direction of Benjamin Franklin's great grandson, estimated the day yielding the highest local tide. The draft on the large American ships required a high tide to safely enter the Port Royal Sound. A storm ruined their perfect day, but the US ships made it in and the rest is history. Another interesting tidbit, the original baseline monuments for the US Coastal survey maps can still be seen. They are located in Ace Basin.
