This is exactly the sort of case where people lose situational awareness. They were worried about other things. The captain was trying to break records getting that vessel out of the shipyard on little sleep, and he was going out of his way to make the "aviation assessors" happy (probably because that meant he could get to sea one day sooner). So why didn't they worry about the Voyage Management System complaining about a position discrepancy between GPS and (presumably) INS? My guess: the system wasn't fully functional yet. This was a trials cruise, and they probably had some other reason to be suspicious of the navigation system. They entered incorrect initialization data for the INS and the VMS noticed the discrepancy right away (damn computers). What does this tell us?? Ironically, trust the electronics. They're probably right, and no matter what, drop anchor and stop rushing things. Computers can be wrong, but they are never sleep-deprived, and they don't worry about the happiness of aviation assessors, and they don't care about their careers. -HAL9000 --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ NavList message boards: www.fer3.com/arc Or post by email to: NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
