Re: Greenwich symposium on History of Navigation
    From: George Huxtable
    Date: 2009 Dec 29, 17:54 -0000

Below is a forwarded copy of part of the (amended) notification from the RIN
for the Symposium on the History of Navigation, to be held at the National
    Maritime Museum, Greenwich , May 6-7, 2010.

They have received many submissions, and much interest has been shown, with
the result that another half-day has been added to what was originally to be
    a one-day meeting.

I am aware of four contributions that have been accepted from Navlist
members; there may be more I don't know about. The full programme hasn't
    been published yet.

The possibility on the Thursday morning, of viewing the work on Harrison's
H2 chronometer looks most interesting. I presume that Jonathan Betts must
have completed the repair job on H1, and is next year progressing to an
overhaul of H2. However, I haven't heard any definite news about the
progress of that work. News from that front appear to have become rather
sparse, since the exploded-picture of the dismantled H1 appeared. Can anyone
    offer more information?

The opportunity that's being offered, on that same morning, to view some of
the items that are off-show, should not be missed either. With other Navlist
members, I've had a chance to see a small sample of the stuff kept in those
off-site back-rooms. There are lots of goodies, that should really be on
    display.

If any Navlist members are considering a visit to the UK in 2010, involving
a trip to Greenwich, that meeting might be worth considering when choosing a
date. Early May is usually a pleasant time, anyway.

    George.

Location: National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London SE10

    Advance Notification

Due to the high caliber and number of abstracts submitted, this symposium
will now commence after lunch on Thursday 6 May and finish around 1630 on
    Friday 7th.
In the morning of 6 May, on a first come first served basis, there will be
the opportunity, for registered delegates and sponsors, to see the
dismantling and reassembly of Harrison's H2 plus a tour of those navigation
artefacts not on general display. In addition, a drinks reception will take
    place on 6th.
