    I have a question. What is the purpose of the dip short table? If you know your position accurately enough to be able to measure the exact distance to the opposite shore, as needed for using the dip short table, then you know where you are to a higher level of accuracy than you will be able to get using your sextant. So why bother to take a sextant shot using the dip short table? Just go below and have another sundowner.
