Gary,
The radar would be used to get the range to check if dip short is needed. Other ships, rocks, bergs, islands, etc might be obstructing. On land it may require hiking a baseline using a pair of bearings to a point on the far shore of a lake. An exact position isn't needed to get a distance to a far shore just a relative position.
