George Huxtable seems to raise a significantr degree of question on your idea, however for what it might be worth, the following are measurments I took of the base of my Davis Atrificial Horizon.
Length, measured with a carpenters folding rule 5 15/16". Minimum width, with side panels erected 3 3/4". The optical glass you mention would have to be cut somewhat smaller than these dimensions, to avoid "binding" of the float, though George appears to bring forth serious problems, He might be making to much of what he references, I cannot say, as most of the conasiderations he mentions are beyond me.
Given the cost of mercury, and perhaps the difficulty in obtaining same, another question here, what you suggest might be worth a try. Seems as if it would be relatively inexpensive. If you follow through, please let us know how it turns out.
