You asked if the difference in the spelling of Nagasaki and Kyushu was significant. Not that I know of. But I do get a kick out of the way the old manuals spelled the names of non-European places. As a poor speller I've always felt that our alphabet is a poor fit to our language. It doesn't seem to fit Japanese, Chinese, or Hawaiian any better.
