I would agree that this is the key element of celestial navigation for me. It puts me in touch with the this planet and the sky above it in a way nothing else does. With a few small mechanical objects and one book you can put your finger on a map or chart and say, "This is where I am," and you will be right to a precision that means you can see that place from where you actually are. Given the scale of our planet, that is truly amazing.

For me, the learning process and being able to convert from a sextant sight to a position is truly fascinating.
