    I've always thought that it was cool that we can take these uncaring spots of light a zillion miles away, put harnesses on them and put them to work for us.

    For me, the learning process and being able to convert from a sextant sight to a position is truly fascinating.

    I would agree that this is the key element of celestial navigation for me. It puts me in touch with the this planet and the sky above it in a way nothing else does. With a few small mechanical objects and one book you can put your finger on a map or chart and say, "This is where I am," and you will be right to a precision that means you can see that place from where you actually are. Given the scale of our planet, that is truly amazing.
