Virgin Rocks was indeed a hazard near the shipping lanes from Northern Europe to America. One of the many mysterious disappearances was the huge Swedish ore carrier NORRBOTTEN in 1915. She left Narvik, Norway on Sep. 12, 1915 with 10,000 tons of iron ore for Bethlehem Steel Works in Philadelphia. On Sep. 23 she sent a morse code message to Cape Race radio station that her position was 100 nautical miles east of Cape Race and expected to arrive in Philadelphia on Sep 26. Nothing was ever heard from the vessel after that. She disappeared with her crew of 42. Theories about her hitting the Virgin Rocks was put forward at the following hearings.
