When I, and a couple of other listmembers, tried to track down some inconsistencies in the way one of the later problems had been set, I found the matter impossible to resolve. Dan Hogan offered some help, but that didn't fix it. I think there had been other such difficulties in the past, which had called for some of the problems to be restated. And sometimes, different approaches to the questions, or a different interpretation of the presumed conditions, produced different results, all of which may have had their own validity. Dan maintained that he was just an ordinary sailor, not into the finer points that some of those problems inevitably raised, which was fair enough. But I thought, at the time that Renee offered to take it on, that it would be quite a handful, to make a consistent set of problems-and-answers out of the series, and I didn't envy her task. I hope that we haven't lost her from the list, as a result. She has provided a different point of view, and talked sense, as our only woman on-board.. Others may not know that Renee is rather a dab-hand at computer graphics. She has kindly adapted a line-image of a traverse board, which is expected to go as an illustration into volume 2 of Ian Jackson's series, for the Hakluyt Society, about the whaling voyages of William Scoresby the younger.
