Any Tamaya sextant will be quite good and serviceable for your application. But, with the ceiling of around $400.00 you wish to spend for your sextant (and I take it not another penny or drachma to be spent making any used sextant you buy serviceable)I'd find and procure a new or used Astra III B sextant. Those can be found used and in good condition in chandler's shops or online for the range you wish to spend. Sometimes one can find really good deals on quality sextants in local shops. The Astra's are rugged, dependable and precise sextants for the price one spends on them. Good luck! -----Original Message----- From: NavList@fer3.com [mailto:NavList@fer3.com] On Behalf Of Sara and Dan Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 10:21 AM To: NavList@fer3.com Subject: [NavList 4526] accurate sextant I enjoy using a sextant with artificial horizon when I travel (on land), to try to find my location. Whan I have calculated my position I check this against a map or gps. The idea is to get as close to the gps reading as possable. I have been using a davis mark 15 sextant but have been disapointed that it needs to be recolumnated before each use. And the plastic construction just dosent feel right. I also have a lancaster mark l X bubble sextant which works well enough after I rebuilt the bubble chamber and re -lubricated the gearing, and a ball recording sextant which I have not yet been able to get to "record" yet because of dried out ink pad. I am looking for a really good used sextant in the under $400 range.
