C sized batteries will work with the MK IX. You only need two. I have had the same set in mine for several years. Both C and D are 1.5 volts. As they are installed in series, the total power output is 3 volts. If you really want to splurge on good batteries, go for lithium, however, regular Duracell copper tops will work just fine. One last word of caution: always remove the batteries if you do not intend to use the sextant for long periods of time.
