Certainly there are other methods.  But the issue is what do the
majority of long distance voyagers use for celestial?

I've also been told that most of them do only sun sights -- a morning
shot advanced to cross with a mid-day shot, with the latter advanced to
cross with a late afternoon shot.

If one is going to do only sun shots, then I see two 21st century
choices:  buy Volume 2 of HO249 each year, or buy a copy of the Nautical
Almanac each year and use a calculator (with the NASR as a backup) for
sight reduction.

For me personally, I'd probably do the latter since that all bodies at
all latitudes, albeit with perhaps a tad more work in sight reduction.
But what's most important to any voyager is to have a method that he/she
is comfortable with and understands reasonably well.
