Volumes 2 and 3 of H.O. 249 are not changed but are permanent tables like H.O.214 and H.O 229. You need a current copy of the almanac to use any of these tables. Only volume 1 is reissued every 5 years.

I've also been told that most of them do only sun sights -- a morning shot advanced to cross with a mid-day shot, with the latter advanced to cross with a late afternoon shot. If one is going to do only sun shots, then I see two 21st century choices: buy Volume 2 of HO249 each year, or buy a copy of the Nautical Almanac each year and use a calculator (with the NASR as a backup) for sight reduction. For me personally, I'd probably do the latter since that all bodies at all latitudes, albeit with perhaps a tad more work in sight reduction. But what's most important to any voyager is to have a method that he/she is comfortable with and understands reasonably well. Lu Abel
