    Frank Reed asked 'could you build a reasonably accurate sextant at home? Does 3D printing have anything like the required precision at this time? Could we re-purpose some other components to create a really good angle-measuring instrument?'

    The biggest difficulty that comes first to my mind is the limitations of the material. Most of the inexpensive 3D printers that I am familiar with use a polymer material that is not very dimensionally stable over temperature and particularly humidity.
