Byron: While on the Liberty Hull, (1958 to 1963) one big junk of metal, where the aft magnetic compass, underneath there was a weld shop, the compass followed the safety rails I had to cut all the rails off of the top where they located the compass. The Navy was foolish in that after the yards, they would schedule a compass adjustment. About 3 months in the yards is enough time to have induced magnetic, they would adjust compass as scheduled than I would do it again after we got to sea and the ship pounded the induced magnetic properties changing the deviation and compass card. This happen 2 times!
