Some sextants manufactured as recently as the 1970s included a long, thin inverting telescope often with a magnification of 12x. These were in addition to more typical 3-4x scopes that seem to have been intended for "normal" sights. Why were these high-power inverting scopes considered useful? What are the "technical" explanations (or excuses)? What are the practical applications, if any? Why were they found especially in Japanese sextant kits? Have any of you experimented with these high-power scopes?
