Interesting, the USN had ten ships of the line but only one in service, and only half of the frigates. Much of the active navy seems to have been concentrated in smaller sloops, brigs, and schooners.
After the War of 1812 and some of the highly publicized single ship naval victories over the British, Congress went on a spending binge, building warships that would not be used until the Civil War and stockpiling great stores of timber and rough cut frames for wooden ships that would never be built because of the development of steam and ironclads.On Sat, May 6, 2017 at 4:43 PM, Bill Ritchie <NoReply_Ritchie@fer3.com> wrote:
