Attached is a graph for the Sun limb to Moon limb distance on Oct. 3rd, 1986 at 10°N, 90°W; 0m altitude. Both curves do indeed appear more pronounced. The relative velocity curve is more pronounced partially because I calculated it at a higher rate (arcmin/hr as opposed to arcmin/half hr), and at a higher fidelity (data points every 5 minutes as opposed to every half hour). For these reasons, I have re-calculated the Moon-Mars velocity at the same rate and fidelity for comparison. Even using the same parameters, the Sun limb to Moon limb velocity curve is more pronounced...as you predicted.
I may get around to calculating the Moon-Mars example from a more southern position later today or perhaps tomorrow. We'll see.
