To illustrate what I meant in my earlier post today. In the diagrams below, my DR position, assumed position, and actual position are coincident, but unknown to me, my sextant is under reading by the width of the ridge of my ruler. With azimuths of 360, 045, and 090, the results suggest a reasonable fix and a deteriorating DR position. However, using star D whose azimuth is 225 instead of star B, the results suggest further investigation required around what might be a reasonable DR position. I apologise if I’m stating the obvious, but as I've said before, if I can draw it, I ought to be able to understand it. DaveP
