Looking to elliminate the storage space required for my expanding collection of charts. 

Have seen at a site selling nautical charts that they can provide a chart printed on site and shipped in a 7x12 inch format. 

I take that to imply that the whole chart 36" x 50" or so can be folded to the size of approxmately 7" x 12" -- mathematically it seems an impossibility, but I have been proven wrong on presumptions in the past. 

anyone know of a good method for folding once rolled charts?  And shouldn't we prefer rolled charts to folded ones when it comes to plotting? 

I have been wondering about this for a long time, and since my sub-service days during the Cold War, aboard a limited space like a SSN or Fast Attack, we stowed charts in a flat file locker, generally folded flat to conserve space. 

I also saw the practice in the Surface Fleet, therefore, if we sail on small boats (some now refer to again as Yachts) we have less space than an average Naval Vessel has to stow our charts. 

So, what's the take to fold or to roll?  And which is that best way to fold said charts?
