Thanks Red for the advice. I was definitly going for brass but had a last minute afterthought to keep on zinc to be as close as possible to the original design.
But in fact you are right with bronze that feature a far lower friction coefficient and even an almost self lubrication that should prevent any further stucking of that part in its bore.

JPP-I would suggest brass, or better bronze, for your new part. Both are much less reactive than zinc (and stronger) and still better than aluminum. And before you install the new part, apply an anti-corrosive barrier (inert grease, antioxidant, antigalvanic paste, etc.) to it anyway.
