An interesting film. The aircraft must have been very quiet if the crew could chat without intercom. The lancaster was somewhat more rustic but could carry about twice the bombload of the B17. The RAF's attempt at a Lancaster film (updated) is not quite Hollywood but gives an excellet overall picture of a Bomber Command raid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAztJVoBTKE The air navigation bit starts at around 37 minutes. For real inter-crew communications try https://www.bing.com/videos/search?&q=Lancaster+chatter+recordings&view=detail&mid=47D97BA2CCD1BB8D828247D97BA2CCD1BB8D8282&FORM=VIRE&rvsmid=A91744DFED9047A0DF40A91744DFED9047A0DF40&form=VDRVRV&ajaxhist=0 Using a sextant would have been impossible over enemy territory, because of the need to weave. Gee was good for giving the aircrasft a good start and also for a safe return, but the sigal reduced while the jamming increased the further they got into Germany. The H2s picture was pretty basic and, if it was probably not possible to home onto individual aircraft, it certainly gave the position of the bomber stream away. No5 Group eventually replaced there H2S with early Loran which was much harder to use initially than Gee. I worked for a couple of years at Bawtry Hall in the 70s, and those 'Geogian' Fireplaces were still there. DaveP
