    Looking at the distance scales, which are most definitely logarithmic in nature and the course side scales which appear related to secant course, I think I can see why there has to be an alternative solution for courses less than 45 degrees.  From 0-45 degrees secant course ranges from only 1 to 1.4 whereas from 45 to 90 it ranges from 1.4 to infinity.  Therefore, the divisions on the scale from course = 0 to 045 would need a microscope to read them and would be effectively unprintable.  What I’m looking at now is how calculating an equivalent chlat solves the problem.  DaveP
