An occasional "social" comment in French or other languages does no harm and may well make someone feel welcome. Sincerely commendable. But if you make an entire post in French, that's excluding the majority of NavList readers.
Only if they are too lazy or can't be bothered to go to the very small effort of figuring out what the post was about.
DO NOT do it. If you wish to carry on a private conversation with Antoine in French, feel free --by private email. Posts to NavList should otherwise be in English, mathematics, and of course "navigator argot".
Well Frank Reed, this is the second recent example you've provided of an unfortunate dictatorial streak. Firstly by arbitrarily 'banning' not just one but two contributors for no good reason that you have provided. I said at the time that I was flabbergasted by this and I remain so.
May I remind you that the NavList is the sum of the contributions made by all of us. It existed before you happened upon it and god willing it will continue should you depart. It is not your personal fiefdom.
Your role is not, as lord high poohbah, to sit in judgement on what people post or, heavens above, which language they choose to use. As a relative newcomer you may not be aware that my recent effort was not the first post in French - that happened a few years ago with a query about something technical followed by a response in the same language. Dan Hogan, our List Manager at the time, saw no reason to comment or issue edicts and why should he have?
I reject your nonsensical and just-invented Frank Reed rule. I fully intend to post in any language I choose. And then what? Shall I be next on your elimination list?
