Well, no, that's certainly not true. The web interface would be useless if that were the case. You can edit a message, open other tabs to look up information or watch a cat video [*], and then go back to editing. No problem.
On the other hand, if you navigate away from the message you're writing --leaving the page you're editing while staying in the same tab-- then it's true that there's no auto-save. Of course, if you tap ctrl-A followed by ctrl-C before you navigate away, you have a copy which you can ctrl-V wherever you like, including back into the edit box when you return or into a plain text editor (ctrl+key on Windows, cmd+key on Mac). I would implement an auto-save system, but this is a tiny community that has stopped growing, so there's not much point. Enabling new users, by making the site more mobile-friendly, does make sense to me.
