Yesterday at around 11:00am Eastern US time (1600 UT), the mail server which sends out email copies of NavList messages to some members did something rather strange. It fired off a few messages from months ago. These may have been messages that were somehow queued on the server but "stuck" (one that I received had headers indicating that it had been delayed in transit for over three million seconds...). Anyway, I see regular status messages from the NavList message boards and email test recipients that I monitor, and I immediately shut down mail delivery to investigate and to attempt to insure that no further old messages would be sent. I also turned off daily digest delivery temporarily. Yesterday's daily digest was sent about an hour ago. There does not seem to be any continuing fallout from this "glitch", and everything is back to normal.
Email is a fragile thing. In many ways the internet email system has been broken for a quarter of a century, and the virtual battle between spam and anti-spam continues (*). Please bear in mind that delivery of NavList messages by email is optional, and it is a luxury. I cannot guarantee that it will continue to function in six months or even in six weeks because of the increasing limitations on bulk email use. If you receive NavList messages by email, and you don't really need them, please . There's a link to do this in each NavList message, but you can also do so by emailing or phoning me: Frank@ReedNavigation.com, phone: 401-644-6012.
For well over a decade, NavList has not been a "list" in the sense of an email list. You can access all content and more on the message boards, now at https://NavList.net. It's an "online community", not a "list". If you do wish to send NavList messages by email, you may continue to do by emailing to NavList@NavList.net. The old posting-by-email address [that's NavList-at-fer3.com], is still valid, but since it is one step removed, it is not reliable. If you have that fer3.com address in your contacts, I do recommend keeping it as a contact since outbound emails, from this end, still propagate from that address. But please avoid sending or replying to that fer3.com address.
Finally, when you do post on the message boards, just a reminder that I removed any minimal membership requirement last Spring, but if you're a regular, please try to use your access code or "NavList ID code". It's not required, but it helps. This code is automatically assigned to NavList regulars and consists of a few letters and a few numbers (something like "abc123" as an example). They're not passwords; they do not provide "secure" access. The codes do identify you well enough to pass your messages through immediately. Otherwise I have to give each message a quick look to make sure it's legitimate. If you don't know your NavList ID code, you can look it up with your email address under the Tools menu on the message boards, or feel free to email or phone me directly (again, that's Frank@ReedNavigation.com or phone: 401-644-6012). If you have never provided me with an email address, that's certainly allowed, but then you would need to contact me (phone?) to get your NavList ID code. Then again, this is not required. You don't really need your NavList ID code. If you're fine with a little delay on your messages and maybe some limitations at a later date, then continue by entering your name on your messages with no code. That works, too!
