On my laptop I used to have a note saved with a lone degree symbol which I copied from the character map (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map). I'd open the note, select and copy the symbol, then just hit [ctrl]+[v] to paste it whenever I needed it. It's an awkward work-around, but it got the job done.
On some versions of Excel, you can click the "Insert" menu and select "Symbol".
