I am assuming you are replying to a question by a novice navigator ?

Might I re-phrase your reply slightly ..yes the AP is chosen closest to DR position (there is a small proviso- rule) in order to use the  tabulated short methods for  site reduction such as HO214 , HO 249 HO 229.

Probably better to phrase the last part with “ using a calc. / computer or HO211 (Ageton) one uses the actual  DR position  as the entering arguments….. to reduce the sight.

Hope you don’t mind my 2 cents worth

I have too often created more confusion in attempting to answer questions, but I'll try again. The Assumed Position is merely a convenience for the use of tables to reduce sights. It is chosen near the DR, and is commonly selected to make a table entry a whole number of degrees. With calculator or computer solutions, there is no need for an AP. Nor was there with Ageton.
