I am assuming you are replying to a question by a novice
navigator ?
Might I re-phrase your reply slightly ..yes the AP is chosen
closest to DR position (there is a small proviso- rule) in order to use the
tabulated short methods for site reduction such as HO214 , HO 249 HO
229.
Probably better to phrase the last part with “ using a
calc. / computer or HO211 (Ageton) one uses the actual DR position as
the entering arguments….. to reduce the sight.

I have too often created more confusion in attempting to
answer questions, but I'll try again. The Assumed Position is merely a
convenience for the use of tables to reduce sights. It is chosen near the DR,
and is commonly selected to make a table entry a whole number of degrees. With
calculator or computer solutions, there is no need for an AP. Nor was there
with Ageton.
