The Mediterranean data is surprisingly sparse, even considering the limitation to American shipping. I suspect that the data extracted from logs was only for when lat-lon was recorded. Once past the Straits of Gibraltar, some vessels dispensed with these observations, and switched to coastal piloting instead (Cape Passero bearing NNW 3 leagues).
