In the army we "declinated" our compasses at a "declination station" where surveyors had determined accurate direction to a distant aiming point. We would adjust the compass index to allow for the "grid- magnetic angle" so that the compass would read "grid directions" based on the Military Grid Reference System, a modification of the Universal Transverse Mercator Grid system.
