    Bob,

    Not withstanding Herbert Prinz's discussion of how in a three body fix when taken pairwise you end up with three different fixes, the cocked hat, there is an error in the way you have advanced the 1624 LOP in the first and later figures.

    At 1624 the the 1624 LOP is down course from the 1624 DR by several miles it would seem.  After advancing that LOP to 2106, the LOP must be down course by the same several miles relative to the 2106 DR.  By definition we advance an LOP by moving it the distance between the associated DR points.

    To Gary, I would say that computing a fix by plotting, ie an analog couputer, allows even the mathematically unsophisticated to do a complex calculation and that is way too much fun to give up for mere numbers.
