Martin,
Sextants that have been stored a long time can get stifff due to old grease. I have had luck with cleaning used sextants of old grease and lubricating with synthetic clock oil. New 4x40mm C&P, Tamaya, Astra, and Celestair scopes are all good. Preferred accessories are whole horizon mirror and the Davis artificial horizon. I'm not a fan of bubble horizons on a standard sextant. There are many affordable second hand aircraft octants that do better with the bubble horizon. Budget at least $450 and head to Ebay.
