    Re: Air navigation "beam" sights

    Hi Folks

As David correctly said – we didn’t give fore and aft shots or parallel shots names, to my knowledge – I have an RAF Air Navigation manual which fell into my bag when I retired from RNZAF – I am not at home at present but will check.

As David also pointed out we could only use the nav stars as per AP3270 to select stars if we wanted shots fore and aft or parallel – excluding the sun and moon shots which you could get an occasional such pre-planned such shot.

However, I had my trusty 41CV HP and I had programmed all the stars, sun and moon into it so I could compute forward an exact dec and azimuth – dial that into the Kollsman and voila the star was exactly in the middle of the very narrow field of view for the Kollsman – and if it was a very dim star – you could find it – you couldn’t using the 3270 pre-comp tables – unless it was a bring star.

The HP 41CV did then allow a lot more capability to get a g/s check – fore and aft or a parallel shot to check tracking.

    Howard G
