Well, there were no artificial horizon sextants in 1914. Germany created a gyro-stabilized artificial horizon sextant for use on U-boats in World War Two. But, a commonly used artificial horizon, going all the way back to the Rogers and Clark expedition in 1804 and earlier. It consists of a bowl of mercury. It's that simple. Observations taken this way are as accurate as a normal marine observation over a sea horizon.
