When I flew to the Caribbean earlier this
year I decided to pack the sextant in my main luggage, rather than worry
about carry-on, and had no problems. I used a hard plastic Storm case
shown here
that I modified to hold the sextant.
One problem with such cases is that they can be so air-tight that change in air
pressure is a problem. That case has a pressure-equalizer built into
it.
