I described the event as "unfortunate" so, David Pike, not a sinking, which I might have called "tragic" or something in that range. Wolfgang K, yes this was very close to the day of "infamy", which was how US President Roosevelt described the attack on Pearl Harbor. That attack on Pearl Harbor (Oahu, Hawaii) began at about 1800 UT on December 7. The position I gave is in the western Pacific about 35 hours later. I didn't say, and probably should have, that the event occurred aboard a major US Navy ship. Given the location and the date and time, what would that USN ship be doing? What would be the logical, strategic course of action? And how might we describe the "state of mind" of USN crewmembers on that vessel? Dave Walden you mentioned the Sun and Jupiter. That's getting warmer! But as David P. pointed out the timing doesn't match. However, there is indeed a connection to "a" Jupiter in this story... but not the planet.
David Pike, you added:
"The sun is ideally placed for dive bomb attacks out of the Sun"
Yes. Excellent point. And given the crew's state of mind, what could happen?
Here's that almanac data again:![]()
