"For those still wondering.I gave up googling 9^th Dec 1941, because Google immediately assumes you meant to write 7th and gives you pages of Pearl Harbor."
Maybe you're using the wrong search engine. I entered
1941 December 9
and Bing made no effort to change the date. Without even scrolling down I saw a site with a list of WW2 events on that date:
https://ww2db.com/event/today/12/09/1941#google_vignette
However, there's no mention of any shots fired at Venus.
"I googled USS Jupiter and bingo. She was a USN Fleet Collier converted in 1920 to become the USN’s first aircraft carrier."
Jupiter / Langley was one of four sister ships in a class haunted by tragedy. USS Cyclops disappeared in 1918 between Barbados and Baltimore with a load of manganese ore. Her loss remains one of the great mysteries of the sea. There was no distress call, and no trace of the vessel or her crew of 300 has ever been found. Proteus and Nereus were sold to Canadian ownership in early 1941. Both disappeared with all hands later that year while carrying bauxite.
