    Tony,

    The formula I use is:

    tan(Z) = -sin(t) / ( tan(d) * cos(L) - sin(L) * cos(t) )

    where Z is azimuth, d is declination, L is latitude, and t is mederian angle.

    Your formula looks the same - with some math reworking.

    I used the formula a lot years ago to compute azimuths for a sun compass - also very useful to get a compass check anytime of day using the sun.  With smart phone apps the formula is not used much but is still valid.
