To all: the AAC/AAF/USAF carried Very Pisotls until the 80s. On the unpressurized aircraft, C-47, C-54, C-124, etc there was a port you locked the gun into and fired it. On an unpressurized plane like the Electra/C-45/SNJ, depending on the local airflow:yes you could fire a flare out in to the slip stream. I used these guns frequently in sea survival training. The flare-ball would in zero wind, go up apx 200 to 300 ft, arc over and fall to the ground all the while burning brightly. Its ball burn life was a good 10 to 15 seconds.
